A record amount of consumers have switched away from the Big Six energy suppliers.

New figures from Energy UK reveal March saw more than 476,500 customers switch electricity suppliers – the highest recorded since November 2013.

For the third time in a year the number has exceeded 400,000, it adds.

Small and mid-tier power providers saw the number of switches at a record high of 206,419. That’s 43% of all switches.

It also found 36% of switching that took place were between larger suppliers.

Lawrence Slade, CEO of Energy UK, said: “It’s fantastic to see customers taking advantage of the multitude of deals on offer. The substantial number of people shopping around and switching to new suppliers is proof of an active market. Not only are more people switching suppliers but the number of switches to small and mid-tier suppliers has hit an all-time high.

“If you have never switched before, you could save hundreds of pounds so join the movement and switch today!”
