Views sought on application for gas extraction from old mine shafts

Alkane Energy has applied for an Environmental Permit to carry out the drilling of a borehole at Rufford Hills Farm in Nottinghamshire

The Environment Agency is seeking views on Alkane Energy’s application to extract gas from old mine shafts.

The energy firm has applied for an Environmental Permit to carry out the drilling of a borehole at Rufford Hills Farm in Nottinghamshire.

The Environment Agency said it is a “well-established” technique the company uses at several sites in the area, with the gas then converted to electricity.

The application documents have been placed on its website for the local community and interested groups to view and provide comments until 28th June 2018.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “We insist that where a permit is required, our standards are met and that we have evidence that the process can take place safely. We will thoroughly assess the application to ensure that people and the environment are protected.”
