First wind turbine installed at E.ON and Equinor offshore project

The 385MW facility is expected to supply around 400,000 households with renewable energy from 2019

The first wind turbine has been installed at E.ON and Equinor’s joint offshore Arkona wind project.

The site, which will be made up of 60 wind turbines in total, is located 35 kilometres off the coast of Rügen in the German Baltic Sea.

The tip of the turbines’ rotor blades will reach a height of 180 metres.

The wind farm will have an output of 385MW and is expected to supply around 400,000 households with renewable energy from 2019.

The €1.2 billion (£1bn) facility is forecast to save up to 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, compared to traditional forms of energy generation.

Holger Matthiesen, Project Director at E.ON, said: “The entire team has done a great job in recent months to start the turbine installation ahead of schedule. We are confident that we will soon be producing clean and sustainable electricity with the first turbines.

“The complete commissioning of the entire wind farm is scheduled for the beginning of 2019 at the latest.”
