A US biomass company has teamed up with an oil giant to produce a new kind of renewable fuel.

Enviva which produces biomass fuel in both the States and Europe has joined forces with ConocoPhillips to produce a new kind of fuel pellet which burns with the same properties as coal. The pellets are made by a process called torrefication where biomass is superheated until it forms a goo which can be turned into pellets that can be burned.

The two have formed a new company called Eco Biomass which aims to distribute the pellets to market. It’s believed they could help utilities reduce their carbon emissions and use existing coal burning plants.
