Sweden invests one billion krona in EV test facility

The new site is expected to become fully operational by 2022

Sweden has invested SEK1 billion (£85m) in an electric vehicle (EV) testing facility.

The Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory (SEEL) will be located in Gothenburg with additional facilities in the Stockholm region and has been funded by the government and industrial partners CEVT, Scania, Volvo Cars and Volvo Group.

The aim of SEEL is to strengthen the competitiveness of the Swedish automotive industry, to help the nation remain at the forefront of innovations in the transport sector and to accelerate the shift towards a fossil-free economy.

SEEL will provide testing for all areas of electrified transport, including electrified gearbox, driveshaft, drivetrain and component testing for hybrids and EVs, as well as smart technology and charging infrastructure.

The Swedish Government hopes the marine and aviation sectors will also be able to make use of the facility, which is expected to become fully operational by 2022.

Mikael Damberg, Minister of Enterprise and Innovation, said: “Our goal is to make Sweden one of the world’s first fossil-free welfare states and to do that we need to both cut emissions and secure our competitiveness. The Swedish automotive industry will play a key role in this transformation.”
