Independent energy giant GDF SUEZ has signed a 15-year deal with recycling management firm SITA UK for the electricity produced by a new 17.65MW energy-from-waste facility in Billingham, Teesside.

The power purchase agreement means GDF SUEZ Energy UK will receive all of the electricity output of the waste facility, which will produce enough energy to power 30,000 homes a year.

The plant has the capacity to process 256,000 tonnes of waste per year and the owners say this could make a significant reduction on waste going to landfill.
