Work has begun on RWE npower renewables’ biomass plant at Markinch, near Fife in Scotland.

Work on the three woodchip storage silos started in mid-March and designer and contractor Kirk Environmental says the first silo has almost reached its finished height of 18m above the ground.

The plant is run with papermakers Tullis Russell and will replace the existing coal-fired power plant. It will have an installed capacity of 50MW and is set to use around 400,000 tonnes of biomass each year.
