China could bring in a tax on carbon dioxide emissions as part of a wider environmental tax, Chinese press reported yesterday.

The step would have global significance, making the country the second after the UK to slap a national price on carbon.

Energy-intensive products such as batteries and luxury goods like aircraft which are not used for public transport were also being looked at to fall under the tax.

The local tax authority would collect the tax rather than the environmental protection department, according to a senior official with the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

Jia Chen, head of the finance ministry’s tax policy division reportedly made the comments in an article published on the MOF’s website.
