Four people have died after a tunnel undergoing construction collapsed at a hydropower station in China.

The accident took place at 2am yesterday at a power station in the province of Jiangxi, east China being built by Jiangxi Water and Hydropower Construction Company said Xinhua news agency, citing local authorities.

The building firm has previously worked on projects in Tunisia, Ethiopia, Vietnam and Afghanistan, according to Jiangxi’s Department of Commerce.

China was the world’s largest hydropower producer in 2012 with 249 million kilowatts of hydropower capacity according to data released by the nation’s state energy administration.
