The UK gas system is “roughly” balanced, according to npower’s daily market report.

That’s because nominations from St Fergus have increased and demand is “slightly” higher than seasonal normal levels due to cooler temperatures.

Alex Guiot from the Optimisation Desk said: “There are five additional planned maintenance events in August which will further limit supply to Europe throughout the month. It has pushed gas prices upwards during yesterday’s session.”

On the power system, the peak margin is at 12GW despite wind generation dropping to 0.5GW but it is expected to reach 2GW later today.

Mr Guiot said: “Gas-fired generation has picked up any shortfall in wind and drops in coal generation while the French and Dutch interconnectors are exporting near capacity levels.”

Brent oil is trading at 44.5/bbl (£33.8/bbl).
