The UK’s largest energy supplier has launched a new generation of smart meters for its customers, which it claims are the “world’s most advanced”. Smart meters replace normal meters, allowing the user to understand and control how much energy they use and how much it costs.

The new meters could spell the end of estimated billing as consumers can accurately record how much energy they use. The new smart meters can also be updated remotely with software upgrades, so British Gas claims there will be no need to have new meters installed as the technology evolves.

The company has the bragging rights of having the largest number of smart meters in the UK- with over 400,000 installed in homes and businesses already.

Dean Keeling, Managing Director of British Gas Smart Homes said: “The Government has given the green light to the roll out of smart meters to every home and business in Britain. This means that households will find it easier to cut their energy use and save money.”
