A UK data centre provider has officially opened its flagship “environmentally intelligent” facility (pictured) in Farnborough this week.

Datum said the new data centre, which boasts more than 40,000 square feet of technical space as well as a separate 10,000 square feet energy centre for backup power, is part of its plans to deliver the “most energy efficient and flexible collocation on the market”. The firm claims the mechanical and electrical systems are designed for high levels of resilience, cooling and backup power generation.

Datum aims to deliver “world-class levels” of performance with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of just 1.25. PUE is a measure of how efficiently a computer data centre uses is power and specifically, how much of the power is actually used by the computing equipment.

Steve Norris, Chairman of the Data Centre Alliance (DCA) said: “This is a superb facility located on an ideal site. Our economic future is based on data and this is a great example of how we are growing data centre capacity in the UK. Datum have done the right thing by adopting the latest high efficiency technology and best practice”.

The data centre is located at the QinetiQ Cody Technology Park.
