The Governor of New York State has pledge nearly $1 billion (£600m) to a sun power project to boost the state’s solar industry.

Called NY-Sun, it’s meant to speed up the process of solar becoming subsidy-free by giving more long-term certainty.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said: “By providing long-term funding certainty, the state is attracting private sector investment, creating new economic opportunities and supporting sustainable development.”

He said projects like NY-Sun can create a more “resilient and flexible” power grid, lower the state’s carbon footprint and “promote a cleaner and healthier environment for all New Yorkers”.

The state now has more than 400 solar companies operating from Long Island to Buffalo. Combined, this market employs more than 5,000 highly skilled jobs and continues to grow.
