An energy firm has been given the green light to carry out exploratory oil drilling in Surrey.
Europa Oil & Gas had appealed against Surrey County Council’s decision not to grant permission to drill in Holmwood.
The government’s Planning Inspectorate has now given permission for the project.
Europa said the decision allows the firm to drill one exploratory borehole and test for hydrocarbons.
It also stated a further planning application had been submitted for an underground well path.
CEO Hugh Mackay said: “We are pleased with the Planning Inspector’s decision… We regard Holmwood as one of the best undrilled conventional prospects in onshore UK and we await Surrey County Council’s decision on the underground well path with interest.”
