British Gas insists its customers’ data that was leaked yesterday has been caused by “someone external”.

The e-mail addresses and passwords of more than 2,000 British Gas customers appeared online yesterday, which was found during routine online checks.

The Big Six company sent e-mails to its customers assuring their systems are secure and no payment data has been revealed.

It stated: “I can assure you there has been no breach of our secure data storage systems so none of your payment data, such as bank account or credit card details, have been at risk. As you’d expect, we encrypt and store this information securely.

“From our investigations, we are confident that the information which appeared online did not come from British Gas.”

Details will be sent to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
