A record number of consumers switched energy suppliers last year.

New figures from Energy UK reveal around 3.8 million people switched to new power providers, with more than 338,000 electricity switches in December alone.

Out of the switches last month, 42% were between larger suppliers, 40% from larger to smaller, 10% from small to larger and 8% between small and mid-tier firms.

The gains by small and mid-tier suppliers were more than 100,000 – representing 30% of all switches.

Energy Secretary Amber Rudd said: “Switching is the best way you can take control of your energy bill and make sure you’re getting the best deal.

“Government has provided more choice in the energy market and there are now 34 energy suppliers to choose from, which is significantly more than in 2010. On average people can save £200 by switching so I urge anyone who hasn’t switched to do it today.”

Earlier today Ofgem said energy firms are overcharging customers.
