EDF Energy has been awarded a contract to supply power to universities, colleges and museums in England and Wales.

The multi-million pound deal will see the Big Six supplier provide up to 1.6TWh of electricity to as many as 4,500 public sector sites.

The initial two-year contract, which follows a tender run by The Energy Consortium (TEC), will start from October 2016, with an option to extend it for a further two years.

Béatrice Bigois, Managing Director of Customers at EDF Energy said: “This is a fantastic win for EDF Energy that further cements our position as the UK’s largest supplier of electricity to the public sector.”

The company also supplies electricity to the UK Government’s Crown Commercial Service.

Last week EDF Energy announced it is extending the life of four of its nuclear power plants in the UK.
