US President Barack Obama plans to deploy 1GW of solar installations to low income families by 2020.

The new target is a 10-fold increase of the initial target he set in his Climate Action Plan in which he aimed to install 100MW of renewable energy on federally-assisted affordable housing.

The project will result in lower energy bills, more empowered consumers and cleaner communities, the Obama Administration stated.

The new goal is also part of the Clean Energy Savings for All initiative which aims to help achieve the target by promoting innovative financing mechanisms, bolstering technical assistance for states and communities and driving innovation.

It also offers training to make sure low and moderate income people can take advantage of clean energy jobs.
