Market Operator Services Limited (MOSL) has been appointed as the official water market operator.

Regulator Ofwat has written to all water wholesalers and retailers to confirm MOSL has the required support from licensees to function as the market operator.

It had asked all licensed parties for confirmation on the appointment of a market operator last month.

The news comes as more than 1.2 million eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations in England will be able to choose who they pay for their retail water and wastewater services from next month.

Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom confirmed the retail water market will open as planned on 1st April.

MOSL states it has been working closely with the Department for Food, Environment & Rural Affairs (Defra) and Ofwat to deliver the IT systems that will enable registration, customer switching and settlement between wholesalers and retailers and offer support and advice on water companies’ readiness activities.

The Crown Commercial Service has joined forces with procurement firms to help the public sector save more than £20 million in water bills over four years.
