A tender process to own and operate transmission lines to two offshore wind farms in the UK has opened today.

Ofgem has invited companies to submit bids for the links, which run from the mainland to the Galloper wind farm off the east coast and the Walney Extension wind farm in the Irish Sea.

This process represents the second stage of the fifth tender round (TR5) for offshore transmission owners (OFTOs), which has already seen more than 2.3GW of capacity installed, with an estimated value of £2 billion.

Ofgem will choose the most competitive bids and award contracts for a 20-year period.

The launch of the second stage of TR5 comes after Ofgem announced shortlists of bidders for the first phase earlier this month.

Companies have eight weeks to enter submissions for the Galloper and Walney Extension links, with bidder shortlists to be published in the Summer.
