Siemens has been selected to supply turbines to DONG’S offshore wind project in the UK.

The engineering giant, will deliver up to 171 turbines with a capacity of 7MW each to the Hornsea Project One wind farm located 120 kilometres off the Yorkshire coast.

It is expected to have a capacity of 1.2GW – enough energy to power around 800,000 British households.

The wind farm is said to be the largest offshore wind project in the world.

The delivery of the turbines is subject to contract signing and it is expected DONG Energy will make a final investment decision in the second half of 2016.

Mats Vikholm, Senior Vice President for DONG Energy Wind Power, said: “The decision by Siemens to open new production facilities in Hull on the British east coast is a key factor in bringing down the cost of wind turbines for this project. This preferred supplier agreement will both help reduce the cost of offshore wind and create and retain real jobs in the UK.”
