Simpler household bills was the common message from energy suppliers today at the House of Commons.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, Generation and Supply Director at SSE said energy bills need to be simplified for consumers at the Energy and Climate Change Committee’s evidence session this morning.

He joined other UK suppliers after being called in by the Committee to answer questions about customers’ engagement in the energy market.

Phil Bentley, Managing Director of British Gas agreed and said people need to be given the details about energy consumption in their homes.

He said: “One thing we’re trying to ensure is that people understand how much their appliances cost to run so in our bills we’ll say how much does a fridge cost to run.. and you can keep your food cold in the fridge for 70p a week – not many people know that.

“It’s all about education and engagement. Once customers start to understand whats in their bill, what makes it go up and if its gone up and gone down and why… then what we need to do is say what can you do to do to control your consumption.”

Mr Bentley also suggested energy consumption was key for consumers to be able to control their household bills.
