A waste-to-energy plant in Dorset is to be expanded, with the addition of a further 1.1MW of capacity.

Eco Sustainable Solutions awarded the contract to Weltec Biopower UK, which built the original Eco-Dorset AD plant and commissioned it in 2012.

The facility is fed by local authority food waste as well as out of date food products.

Following the extension, around 37,000 tonnes of waste is expected to be processed every year, generating an electrical output of 1.6MW.

Electricity produced at the facility is fed to an adjacent feed mill and the excess is sold to the National Grid.

The extension is scheduled to be completed later this year.
