DONG Energy has installed the first of the world’s largest turbines at a wind farm off the UK coast.

The 32 turbines, made by Vestas, at the Burbo Bank extension will generate a total of 258MW – enough electricity to power more than 230,000 homes.

The extension to the existing wind farm, which includes 25 smaller turbines, is expected to be completed by the first half of 2017.

Project Director Claus Bøjle Møller said: “By using bigger turbines we are able to bring down the cost of providing clean, renewable energy to homes around the UK.”

Around 45 full-time employees will work on both the Burbo wind farms out of a newly built operation and maintenance facility in Liverpool.
