Siemens has installed the latest version of its giant 8MW turbine at the national test centre in Østerild in Denmark.
It is equipped with a 154-metre rotor – certified by DNV GL, an international certification body last month.
The offshore turbine prototype will be used for both mechanical and electrical testing, with final type certification expected next year.
With full commissioning, Siemens will enter final development phase for the new turbine that is expected to allow for up to 10% higher annual energy production.
Michael Hannibal, CEO Offshore at Siemens Wind Power said: “The evolution based on our platform strategy demonstrates that innovation to lower the cost of wind energy can work without compromising the proven reliability of a technically mature product.”
Last month a new 9MW offshore turbine is said to have broken the sector’s energy generation record.
