VW has announced the next version of its Microbus camper van will be electric.

Based on the design of the I.D. BUZZ, the production version will incorporate many ideas from the concept car, such as variable seating arrangements, interactive connectivity and automated driving.

It’s expected to have a range of 373 miles and its electric drive doesn’t take up much space, allowing the axles to be mounted far apart.

The long wheelbase and short overhangs this creates mean there’s more space in the interior without having to bulk up the overall size of the vehicle.

The company has suggested it will also offer an I.D. BUZZ Cargo variant for zero-emission delivery operations.

Expansion of its electric vehicle range is part of Volkswagen’s future strategy, which foresees more than 30 all-electric models on offer by 2025.

Volkswagen CEO Dr Herbert Diess said: “After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said ‘please build this car’.

“The vehicle is an important pillar in Volkswagen’s electric drive initiative and carries the Microbus driving feeling into the future.”

The model is due to go on sale in 2022.
