US oil producer Chevron announced it is suspending drilling off the coast of Brazil indefinitely following an oil spill at its Frade project earlier this month. The “oil seep” was initially estimated to be up to 650 barrels of oil.

Brazil’s national oil and gas agency, the ANP, said yesterday on its website that it had imposed the drilling suspension on Chevron.

However the firm denies this, claiming it was a voluntary suspension, adding in a statement: “Chevron’s decision to suspend its drilling operations has no impact on its current production in the Frade field or on other Frade field operations.”
