Lobbyists are warning water policy changes need to be carefully scrutinised so they don’t negatively affect businesses.

Today Defra released its Water White Paper which spelled out plans to shake up the water sector, placing more emphasis on environmental issues and opening up the market to more entrants.

Lobbyists at the CBI made it clear UK competitiveness must not be put at risk.

Rhian Kelly, CBI Director for Business Environment said: “In a difficult economic climate and given the scale of investment needed in the UK’s water infrastructure to ensure it is resilient and fit for purpose, it is critical that policy makers and regulators maintain certainty for investors.

“Thorough consultation with industry will be needed to ensure no unintended consequences emerge that could impact on the UK’s competitiveness.”
