Vulnerable and elderly customers are being offered free insulation by British Gas and anyone who refers them can get their hands on £50 in cash.
It is estimated that £1 in every £4 spent on heating in the UK is wasted due to poor insulation in the housing stock.According to the Energy Saving Trust, loft insulation can save households up to £175 from their heating bills. DECC says nearly half of Britain’s homes do not have adequate basic insulation.
Jenny Saunders, Chief Executive of National Energy Action welcomed the news: “I applaud this offer from British Gas which aims to deliver energy saving measures to the poorest households and at the same time reward those who are identifying and helping more vulnerable members of our communities.”
Under the plans announced today, individuals can only receive the money if the person they refer receives the state pension, has an income below £16,190 or is on income related benefits.
