The UK has seen a “strong import” of power so far this month against predictions from the previous week.

Energy supplier npower made the suggestion in its weekly market report following news about the UK-France electricity interconnector back in operation after recent outage issues.

Sammy Blay, Client Portfolio Manager at npower’s Optimisation Desk said stronger wind and coal generation also helped boost supply into the UK.

He said French power prices were low as milder weather and a public holiday decreased demand. However, Norway saw “strong and steady flows” with no supply faults.

He also suggested a “huge chunk” of global market liquidity disappeared due to the US business shutdowns as a result of Hurricane Sandy hitting the East coast of America.

For gas, the demand was weak this week, which meant a loss for traders.
