There were 4.8 million energy supplier switches in 2016, a new record.
Data published today by Energy UK shows last year’s figure was the highest since the firm started publishing statistics in 2013 and was almost a million higher than in 2015, a 26% increase.
This marks a continuation of the two years’ trend of rising numbers of switches – the average number was more than 400,000 a month in 2016.
In December, the number of switches reached 449,921, up 33% on the same month a year before. One in five of those were to a smaller supplier.
Summer also saw record highs.
Energy UK believes the introduction of the Energy Switch Guarantee last year has helped to make switching easier and provided greater confidence for customers when moving supplier.
Energy consumers don’t even have to change supplier to potentially save as much as £261 a year.
