French President-elect Emmanuel Macron has set a target to double the nation’s wind and solar capacity by 2022.

He made the pledge during an event prior to winning the presidential race.

Mr Macron also aims to exit from coal-based energy production in the fight against global warming and move towards alternative, renewable energy sources.

In addition, he said he would re-evaluate the carbon price and invest in research to identify ways of trapping greenhouse gases.

The president-elect previously also pledged to make €4 billion (£3.4bn) of government funding available to the poorest households to help make their homes more energy efficient as well as invest in renovating public buildings in France.
