Changing the UK speed limit to 80mph rather than 70mph will be bad for the climate as well as the economy. These were the words of Friends of the Earth, who are adamant plans by the Transport Secretary will lead UK drivers down the road to ruin.

Green campaigners say that increasing the limit will increase fuel consumption and therefore hitting drivers’ pockets as well as damaging our climate.

Friends of the Earth’s Transport Campaigner Richard Dyer said: “It will increase carbon emissions justas we urgently need to reduce them to help protect us all from dangerous climate change. Raising the motorway speed limit seems like a cynical move to please a few Tory voters and makes a mockery of David Cameron’s aim to lead the ‘greenest government ever’.

Mr Dyer suggested reducing speed limits would create a better environment: “More 20mph zones will help cut CO2 and make our streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians.”
