Energy supplier E.ON’s winter price rise kicks in from today, with the average dual fuel price increasing by 8.7%.

This will add £110 to the average dual fuel bill, going up from £1,260 to £1,370 a year. The average electricity price goes up 7.7% while gas rises 9.4%.

Around one in six of all E.ON customers are on capped or fixed products which it says means they are not “directly” affected by these changes.

Announcing the rise back in December, chief executive Tony Cocker said the supplier held back from increasing prices “for as long as we possibly could” but “Unfortunately the other costs which make up energy bills are rising”.

He cited more expensive wholesale energy prices, the Government’s carbon tax, the cost of using electricity networks around the country as well as paying for more pricey renewable energy sources.
