West Lothian Council has reduced its annual electricity use by nearly 13 million units in the last five years, a decrease of 26% according to a report on energy costs.
Gas and biomass use also reduced by 10% during the same period.
The council aims to offset rising energy costs by focusing more on essential services.
The local authority implemented energy-saving measures including guidance for heating, LED lighting upgrades, thermal improvements and solar panel installations.
The council is projected to save £575,000 in energy costs across its estate in 2024/25.
However, energy costs are expected to rise from £14.3 million in 2023/24 to £19.3 million in 2027/28, attributed to predicted increases in electricity prices and geopolitical conflicts.
Leader of West Lothian Council Lawrence Fitzpatrick said: “Huge steps have already been taken to reduce the council’s energy usage.
“Thanks to all the officers who have worked to reduce energy use, which both helps the environment and ensures more money can be spent on services for the West Lothian community.”
