Energy industries have welcomed the new Bill but are calling for the government to do more to encourage the reduction of electricity usage.

This comes as Energy Secretary Ed Davey announced a probable rise in bills yesterday in an attempt to reform the electricity market.

Robert Sansom, a member of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) said the Energy Bill needs to focus on reducing electricity demand following the expected rise in energy bills.

He told ELN: “The important thing is energy efficiency will help reduce the offset to higher prices… Moving away from carbon-based fuel will reduce the volatility of costs associated with that.”

He added the electricity market reforms should ensure customers are rewarded with incentives accordingly.
