Ecotricity’s boss donated ‘tens of thousands of pounds’ to Just Stop Oil and Labour

Dale Vince has backed the environmental activist group multiple times in the past

The Founder of Ecotricity has admitted he has donated “tens of thousands” of pounds to Just Stop Oil activists and the Labour party.

Energy company Ecotricity reportedly gave more than £20,000 to the leader of the Labour Keir Starmer during the party’s 2020 leadership contest.

In October last year, a further donation was allegedly made to Labour Deputy Leader Angela Rayner.

Dale Vince is also a major backer of Just Stop Oil activists – in an interview with Sky News, Mr Vince confirmed he had donated “tens of thousands” of pounds when the group first launched and an additional lifeline in November when their funds were running low.

He said: “I understand why they do what they do. It’s what they have in their power to do. Whereas big business has different powers to pursue its agenda and we have no real answer to that except sometimes to take to the streets.”

A spokesperson for Just Stop Oil told ELN: “Keir Starmer has stated that the Labour Party will halt all new oil licences, which we understand to mean that Cambo, Rosebank and Jackdaw would not proceed under a Labour Government.

“Since Labour are now the government in waiting, it is understandable why Dale Vince would fund a Labour Party that supports ending new oil and gas.”

ELN contacted the Labour Party for comment.
